Walmart on Campus
Store design
This Walmart located on the University of Arkansas campus was in need of a remodel. The 3,371-square-foot store has a very tiny footprint compared to even the smallest Walmart Markets, this caused the space to feel overcrowded and cramped. The challenge was how to utilize the space while maximizing sales. After reviewing sales data, the assortment was updated to specifically target the college demographic. There was also a desire to add new innovation that could cater to the life of students living on campus.
Improvements
Broader assortment
Time saving checkout experience
Pickup lockers for online orders
Mobile express pharmacy
Expanding delivery to residence halls and campus housing
Elevation & Plan
The Walmart signage was updated to reflect the updated company branding, while the store front aesthetic stayed consistent with the surrounding shops.
To create more customer space a couple shelves were removed and the rest were rotated to align horizontally. The Pharmacy footprint remained unchanged due to cost, but signage and mobile features were updated.
Merchandise
The counters were lowered by a foot to provide better visibility and the color switched to black from grey for a more streamlined look.
A cooler fixture was added to be used for premade Grab & Go snacks and meals.
To create more space, all the registers were removed except for one, and it was relocated next to a single self-checkout register .
Pickup Lockers
Walmart was beginning to expand their Online Pickup initiative and we wanted to implement a unique system for this store. We landed on a 24 hour Pickup locker system so a customer could order via the website or app during store hours but would could pick it up at any time, day or night.
When the store closed, a partition would block off the store where merchandise was, and would allow a corridor to be accessible where a customer could access the lockers with their order.
We decided to span the lockers across the entire wall and add a video screen to emphasis this is the focal point of the store. Due to the rotated counters and lowered self height, the Pickup wall is visible wherever the customer is in store.
