Transformation:
Self-checkouts and Merchandise Shops
Studies have shown that self checkouts are way more time efficient than manned registers at getting customers through the line and out the door. As customers become more acquainted with using SCOs, the frequency of user error continues to decrease. By removing product from inside the bullpen to the outside shops, the amount of theft and shrink also radically decreases.
This design removed all the manned registers and replaced them with a new “Large Basket SCO along the North & South ends of the bullpen, while the traditional Express SCOs lined the West and East boarders. The Grocery facing side added a Grab & Go shop that mimics a standard gas station setup. On the General Merchandise side are a three distinct areas: Dollar Shop, an Entertainment Nook, with a Money Center underneath.
Self Checkouts (SCOs)
Large Basket SCOs (LBSCOs)
LBSCOs were designed to accommodate shoppers with a full basket of items to checkout. The shopper pushes the front of the cart to the black shelf that says “cart here” and then the customer walks to the side to easily grab items from the cart, scan the item, and place the item in a bag to the right.
Express SCOs
Express SCOs are traditional self checkouts that have existed in stores for years. The intent is for these to be for shoppers with only a few items and don’t need to full LBSCOs in order to check out quickly.
